The Hub, a cornerstone of downtown Almonte shopping scene, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

Established in 1974 by a group of dedicated women from Pakenham and Almonte, The Hub was opened as a non-profit organization supporting and supplying services to the community. Over the decades, The Hub has grown far beyond the founders’ dreams, making a significant impact on the well-being of Mississippi Mills and the surrounding area.

The Hub and its sister-store, Rebound, are dedicated to serving the most vulnerable in their community through revenue generated in their two stores. The organization gives over $100,000 back to the community annually supporting various causes including hospice care, scholarships, health needs, sports teams, special events, Christmas baskets, Lanark County Interval House, Lanark County Food Bank, and so much more.

The Hub is run by a team of 85 passionate volunteers and a dedicated Board of Directors. Board Member at Large Chris Cavan and former Board Member Paddy Vargas, also a daughter of one of the founders, made it clear that The Hub operates with heart. The two proudly listed the Hub’s many achievements and extensive accomplishments, which include the opening of CHEO and Lanark County Interval House, among many others.

“The organization really got its start as something for women by women,” said Cavan. “At that time, Lanark County was like the poor cousins of Ottawa and there were a lot of needs. It was brilliant to think up The Hub: a safe haven and recognition that someone had to give these women and helping hand.”

The Hub’s 50th anniversary celebrations began with Razzmatazz, a showcase of 50 years of fashion. More events are planned including a birthday party where everything in the store will be priced at 50 cents, and a remake of “The Hubera”, a play written in the early days by Fern Martin.

Cavan assures that community members are given a hand up by The Hub every day.

“By shopping and donating here, you make a difference.”

The Hub, located at 118 Mill St. in Almonte, is open six days a week. Volunteer applications and donation forms can also be found on The Hub’s website.
