Smiths Falls Police Service

Smiths Falls police have provided an update regarding the large police presence at Lombard and Lavinia Streets on Thursday, March 21.

In a media release, police say that at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, the Smiths Falls Police Service was alerted to a suspicious incident involving “a distraught female,” who police say sought shelter at a business on Lombard Street after being assaulted inside a residence on Lavinia Street.

Police say their investigation revealed that 32-year-old Kristen Mulville of Smiths Falls assaulted two people on Lavinia Street.  Mulville was arrested and charged with assault, two counts of assault with a weapon, and mischief under $5,000. She was held in police custody for a bail hearing.

During this same investigation, there was further information that a male wanted by OPP on numerous charges was inside the residence on Lavinia Street and in possession of a handgun.  OPP assisted Smiths Falls Police Service with their Emergency Response Team, Tactics and Rescue Units and under an abundance of caution for public safety, the area was secured.

Police say that as the residence was being cleared, officers learned that the wanted male was in fact at another address on Parkland Court.  Smiths Falls police obtained a warrant to enter the residence and the man was located “hiding inside.”

Caleb Bennett, 34, of Smiths Falls was arrested. No handgun was located.

OPP now have Bennett in custody on the strength of their warrants, pending bail hearing.
