St. Lawrence College (SLC) and The Thousand Islands Playhouse (TIP) have joined forces in a new partnership aimed at elevating the educational experience of SLC’s Music Theatre Performance students, as well as taking the college’s productions to the next level.

The collaboration entails TIP taking charge of building sets, costumes, and props for SLC’s shows. The expertise of TIP’s professional carpenters, wardrobe department, scenic artists and technicians, who are accustomed to crafting the company’s regular season, will also be extended to SLC’s productions.

Les Casson, dean of SLC’s Creative Industries and the Brockville campus, explained that students will experience the breadth of expertise that supports performers in a professional company.

“I’m thrilled that TIP wants to collaborate in bringing the best possible learning experience to SLC,” Casson added. “There is so much that we can do together to build capacity for theatre and performing arts in Eastern Ontario. This is just the beginning.”

The initial two-year agreement sets the groundwork for a comprehensive collaboration that will eventually go beyond production support. Plans for student internships, involvement in professional seasons, knowledge exchange, and technical workshops are in motion.

Brett Christopher, Artistic Director of Thousand Islands Playhouse, emphasized the significance of the partnership in providing SLC students with unparalleled real-world experience and industry connections.

“This partnership represents a powerful convergence of talent, resources, and vision,” said Brett Christopher, artistic director of Thousand Islands Playhouse. “By leveraging our expertise in professional theatre production, we aim to provide SLC students with unparalleled opportunities to gain real-world experience and connect with the industry.”

In addition to the partnership announcement, SLC has opened ticket sales for its upcoming spring lineup, featuring “The SpongeBob Musical” at the Brockville Arts Centre from April 5-7, “NINE” at Thousand Island Playhouse, Firehall Theatre from April 12-14, and “New Faces” at Brockville Arts Centre from April 12-14, showcasing the talent of first-year musical theatre students.
