The Belleville Police Service reports that on Feb. 2, just after 9 a.m., law enforcement responded to a request for assistance from a Ministry of Transportation (MTO) officer at the intersection of Cannifton Rd and Byron Street.

Police say the MTO officer had initiated a vehicle stop and encountered resistance from the two male occupants while attempting to obtain “necessary documentation.” The situation reportedly escalated as both individuals displayed aggression and engaged in physical assault.

Law enforcement personnel intervened to support the MTO officer. “Both males continued to be aggressive and then became physically assaultive,” states the media release.

Eventually, the events led to the apprehension of 31-year-old Andrew Mackinlay and 34-year-old Matthew Mackinlay, both residents of Belleville.

Both individuals were arrested and charged with assaulting a peace officer.

Charges have not been proven in court.

Following the arrest, they were transported to the Belleville Police Service and subsequently released on an undertaking, with a scheduled court appearance set for March.
