The death of Steven Tate, a 34-year-old resident of Montague Township, has sent waves of shock through Smiths Falls and its surrounding areas.

Tate’s lifeless body was discovered on November 8, 2023, adjacent to Highway 15, sparking an investigation into what authorities now believe to be a hit-and-run collision.

Tate had been reported missing just days before his body was found, having last been seen alive on November 4, 2023.

Investigators working on the case suspect that the collision involved a dark-coloured hatchback or sedan, likely bearing significant damage to the front passenger side. The Lanark County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Crime Unit, under the guidance of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, has been leading the investigation. Their efforts have been further supported by the OPP Collision Reconstructionist and Technical Collision Investigation team, collaborating closely with the Office of the Chief Coroner and Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.
