‘Stay inside’: Smiths Falls police dealing with active situation on William Street East

UPDATE: Smiths Falls police seize shotgun, arrest local man in William Street East incident

UPDATE: Smiths Falls police said just before 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday that a male has been taken into custody peacefully. Roads are being re-opened. Police say more information will be provided soon in a press release.

Just after 8 a.m. on the morning of Wednesday, June 26, the Smiths Falls Police Service said they are dealing with an “active situation” on William Street East between Market and Beckwith Streets.

In a Facebook post, police said that for “public safety, residents within this area are asked to stay inside until this matter is resolved.”

Members of the public are asked to stay out of the general area.

In an update just before 10 a.m. on Wednesday, the OPP’s media relations coordinator Bill Dickson stated that “the incident is contained and there is believed to be no threat to public safety,” but people are still asked to stay indoors and avoid the area if possible “to allow police to focus on the incident.”

Dickson said OPP is providing support to the SFPS in this matter.
