Lanark County OPP have confirmed that the human remains found in the Mississippi River on Sunday, May 12 were those of a missing Carleton Place man.

While police did not report the identity of the person, the Bring Home Mathew Facebook page has confirmed that the deceased is Mathew, who had been missing since January of this year.

“We are all shocked and devastated and have been trying to process all the information,” reads a post written by Mathew’s sibling.

“I personally want to thank everyone for all the support and compassion you have shown us and Matty.”

A media release from police explains that officers “began searching for a missing 52-year-old male January 20, 2024. He had last been seen two days earlier in Carleton Place.”

Police said a post-mortem examination has determined no signs of foul play.

“It appears the male had been in the water since he disappeared,” the release says.

The Facebook post explains that Mathew has no estate, so donations are welcome to “help lay him to rest in the way that he deserves.”
