Amid the traffic-heavy period between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, a vehicle fire closed down the westbound lanes of Ontario’s busiest highway near Napanee.

The incident occurred right at the noon hour of Thursday, Dec. 28, 2023. According to the Lennox and Addington (L&A) County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), officers from the detachment were on patrol when they “spotted a semi truck parked on the side of the road on fire.” The transport was stopped on the shoulder of the westbound lanes of Highway 401 near Switzerville Road.

By the time police arrived on scene, the transport cab was “fully engulfed” in flames, police said, and the driver of the truck was standing on the side of the road uninjured. There was no collision involved in the incident.

Police shut down the westbound 401 from County Road 4 to Switzerville Road as emergency responders tended to the fire and subsequent clean-up efforts. One lane of westbound Highway 401 was reopened by 12:46 p.m. while emergency crews worked to remove the vehicle from the highway, with both westbound lanes reopened by 2:42 p.m., according to the OPP.

No charges were laid in relation to the incident.
