On the morning of July 23, 2023, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a concerning call reporting an armed man firing shots on his property in Picton. The individual, who had instructed the caller to contact the OPP, indicated he would be awaiting their arrival outside his residence.
Upon arrival, officers established a perimeter around the property. As the man emerged from his driveway, visibly armed with a rifle, he was met with multiple rounds from an Anti-Riot Weapon ENfield (ARWEN). Subsequently, a police dog subdued the individual by biting him on the neck. The man was then handcuffed and transported to the hospital for evaluation under the Mental Health Act. The injuries from the dog bite were reported as minor.
Following a thorough review of the incident, Joseph Martino, the Director of the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), concluded that there were no substantial grounds to suspect any criminal wrongdoing by the officers involved in the deployment of the ARWEN.
