The Lennox and Addington (L&A) County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police is currently investigating after a vehicle fire occurred at Napanee District Secondary School (NDSS).
Just after 8:20 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 23, 2023, officers with the L&A OPP on patrol noticed a vehicle on fire behind the high school. Greater Napanee Fire Services were dispatched to the scene, where the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames, and worked quickly to knock down the fire.
“It was parked away from the school building,” the OPP said the following morning. “There was no one injured, no damage to the school.”
Officers were seen patrolling the area after the fire was extinguished, presumably looking for someone in relation to the fire. The OPP did not immediately confirm police were looking for a suspect in this case, nor if the fire has been deemed suspicious in nature.
The OPP did say, however, that “police are familiar with the vehicle owner,” and stated that the fire is not related to the two fires that occurred in the early morning hours of Monday, Oct. 23, 2023.
Kingstonist has followed up with the L&A OPP to confirm police are seeking a suspect in relation to the vehicle fire. This article will be updated if/when more information becomes available.
Update (Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2023, at 12:10 p.m.): In response to Kingstonist inquiries, Constable David Yome, Media Relations Officer for the L&A OPP, said the vehicle fire at NDSS has been deemed suspicious.
“Police are talking with the owner of the vehicle and will be reviewing video surveillance from the school,” Yome relayed.
