The Humane Society Hastings Prince Edward has introduced a new initiative to help senior humans adopt senior pets.
Starting Oct. 1, all animals in the shelter aged six and above are available for adoption at no charge to eligible adopters aged 60 and older as part of the new Seniors for Seniors program.
The initiative is made possible by the generous sponsorship of Bay View Home Hardware.
Often, older animals struggle to find new homes despite having plenty of love and companionship to offer. These animals tend to be calmer, making them an ideal match for older individuals seeking animal companionship. The program not only benefits these animals but also enhances the lives of seniors in the community.
Chrissy Busscher, co-owner of Bay View Home Hardware in Belleville, noted that “this program will enhance the happiness and well-being of both animals and seniors in our region, and we are delighted to contribute in any way possible.”
The sponsorship from Bay View Home Hardware plays a crucial role in covering the medical and dental needs of these older animals, as well as essential services such as microchipping and spaying/neutering, ensuring that they are prepared for their new lives.
Marilyn Lawrie, the Executive Director of HSHPE, expressed gratitude, stating, “We are immensely thankful to Bay View Home Hardware for their sponsorship. Their financial support enables us to provide comprehensive care for these animals, preparing them for their forever homes.”
This initiative supersedes the shelter’s previous practice of offering senior animals to senior adopters at reduced rates. To learn more about this program, please visit the official website at humanesocietyhpe.ca/seniors-for-seniors/.
