Two Belleville men have been charged after allegedly stealing a woman’s purse.

On January 27 at 7:50 pm, Belleville police responded to a theft call at a North Front Street business.

In a media release, police explain that the complainant, an employee of the business, reported that two males entered the rear of the building and stole her bag, which had a purse in it. Police reviewed surveillance footage to take a look at the suspects.

Later, at around 10:25 p.m., officers on patrol spotted who they believed to be the two suspects on North Front Street.

“During the arrest, one of the suspects became violent, assaulting an officer,” police say.

Both males were arrested, taken to Belleville Police Service, and the stolen items were mostly recovered.

Paul Matheson, 31, of Belleville, faces charges of theft under $5,000 and two counts of failing to comply with probation.

Devin Deacon, 26, also of Belleville, is charged with theft under $5,000 and assault police with intent to resist arrest.

Charges have not been proven in court.

Both were released on an Undertaking and are scheduled to appear in court in March.
