A 14-month-old baby girl was hospitalized for hypothermia after being discovered on the front step of a residence on Stavebank Road in Belleville’s west end on the morning of Tuesday, Dec. 5. A passerby heard the infant crying around 10:30 a.m. and, receiving no response after knocking on the door, alerted the authorities.
Law enforcement and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) promptly arrived at the scene, transporting the child to the hospital for necessary treatment. Inside the residence, the mother of the baby was found unconscious in the basement. To safeguard the infant’s identity, the mother’s name has not been disclosed.
As of the latest reports, the infant’s condition is considered stable. A 31-year-old woman from Belleville has been charged with failing to provide the necessities of life. She was released from custody and is scheduled for a court appearance on December 27, 2023.
