An open house for the Leeward House project at 1133 County Road 5 in Sophiasburgh Ward is scheduled for Monday, February 26.

The event will be held at the Sophiasburgh Town Hall located at 2771 County Road 5, Demorestville, running from 5-7 pm. The format will be drop-in, with municipal staff present to offer information and address queries.

Leeward House represents a pioneering transitional housing initiative in Prince Edward County. It aims to facilitate the transition of nine individuals from homelessness to a supported congregate living environment with on-site staff. Residents will benefit from tailored programs, services, and supports geared towards attaining permanent, sustainable housing solutions.

The facility, presently operating as The Maples retirement home, is on the market. Collaborative efforts between the municipality and community partners Base31 have led to an agreement wherein Base31 would acquire the property, and the County would engage in a 25-year lease to manage the transitional housing facility. The five current tenants at The Maples will receive assistance from County staff and property owners to facilitate their relocation to alternative housing.

For those unable to attend the open house or with inquiries, Elis Ziegler, Affordable Housing Supervisor, can be reached via email or at 613.922.3785.
