On February 14, 2024, the Prince Edward County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) apprehended three individuals suspected of being involved in a door-to-door scam.

In a media release, police say the arrest came following a report received by officers detailing an incident where a resident had been approached on the previous day by individuals offering driveway paving services. The resident, exercising caution, deferred the work to the following day and notified the OPP of the suspicious encounter.

When they returned the next day, the suspected scammers hastily fled the scene upon learning of police involvement. However, officers successfully tracked down their vehicle on Highway 62 and arrested the three individuals. While they were not immediately charged, they were handed over to a federal enforcement partner for further investigation.

To prevent falling prey to similar fraudulent schemes, the public is urged to adhere to the following precautions:

  • Exercise caution when approached by unsolicited contractors.
  • Avoid making impromptu decisions about hiring contractors.
  • Conduct thorough research before engaging with any service providers.
  • Remain skeptical of offers that seem too good to be true.

For additional guidance on safeguarding against fraud, individuals are encouraged to utilize the resources provided by the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
