The Township of Rideau Lakes held the Additional Residential Unit/Tiny Home Summit at the North Crosby Community Hall on Tuesday, June 25.

The event attracted over 40 attendees interested in exploring the potential of tiny homes as a viable living option.

The summit featured a series of presentations from guest speakers covering topics such as municipal approvals, affordability, the building process, and personal experiences of living in tiny homes. Municipal staff were on hand to discuss planning and building requirements and to answer general questions. A tiny home was also brought onsite so folks could explore its design and features.

Mayor Hoogenboom remarked that the township is looking forward to helping residents “better meet their own family housing needs or have the opportunity to earn income through additional units.”

The mayor said he was “pleased to see such community support for the common goal of offering more housing opportunities within Rideau Lakes.”

Guest speakers included Caroline Rigutto, the affordable housing coordinator for the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville, who discussed additional residential units; Ed Peterson, founder and director of the Tiny Town Association, who presented on their community projects in Eastern Ontario; Colette Kenny of Half Acre Homestead, who shared her experiences of living in and building tiny homes; and Yuergen Beck, President of Redwood Homes, who specializes in constructing tiny homes.

Additional units and tiny homes are becoming increasingly popular across Canada as a solution to the housing crisis. In response, the Township of Rideau Lakes amended its Zoning By-law in 2023 to accommodate the changing needs of property owners and their families, allowing for additional residential units and tiny homes. The United Counties of Leeds and Grenville also introduced a secondary suite funding program in 2022 to align with provincial objectives.
