Prince Edward County long-term care facility H.J. McFarland Memorial Home is set to benefit from an infusion of $383,271 in additional one-time funding allocated by the Ontario Ministry of Long-Term Care.

The funding aims to bolster the quality of care and services residents receive.

The investment, facilitated through the Ontario government’s Local Priorities Fund, earmarks $362,820 for H.J. McFarland Memorial Home. This allocation will help procure essential equipment and deliver comprehensive training to staff members. The equipment acquisition includes items such as IV therapies, portable X-ray services and adjustable dining room tables, all of which are poised to enhance the dining experience for the residents.

Furthermore, a portion of the funding, amounting to $20,451, has been allocated to support the acquisition of diagnostic equipment and associated training. These resources target improvements in the management and treatment of conditions that frequently result in avoidable emergency department visits.

“We are thrilled to access this additional support from the province,” stated the home’s director, Kyle Cotton, in a media release. He explained that typically, these services would only be offered outside of the home by an external provider.

“Leaving the Home and travelling to these providers can be difficult for residents and can include costly transportation charges. Providing these services in-house not only makes it easier for our residents, but also eases the strain on the local health-care system.”

Minister of Long-Term Care, Stan Cho, stated that “the Ontario government is pleased to support H.J. McFarland Memorial Home through the Local Priorities Fund. This funding will help H.J. McFarland Memorial Home invest in specialized staffing, equipment, and other services to ensure that residents receive the right care in the right place, helping reduce avoidable emergency department visits and hospital stays.”

H.J. McFarland Memorial Home, operated by the County of Prince Edward, is an 84-bed supported living facility catering to seniors. The facility prides itself on delivering compassionate, resident-centred care that upholds the dignity of its residents. Further information about H.J. McFarland Memorial Home can be accessed via the County’s official website.
