It may be hard to conceive of in late January, looking out at a grey world of snow and slush, but spring is indeed on its way.

And with that in mind, the City of Belleville has officially opened the application process for the 2024 Community Gardens Program.

Now in its 12th year, the initiative was established in 2012 by the City’s Green Task Force.

“Community Gardens is always very popular with the community, so we are excited to bring it back,” states Amanda Azzopardi, environmental coordinator with the City. “Not everyone has space or the right environment for a garden, so this program gives residents an area and the resources to grow their own fresh fruits and vegetables while being a part of a community of other gardeners.”

Successful applicants will be granted a plot at one of the three City-operated gardens—Ponton Park (251 Dundas St. West), West Hill (41 Octavia St.), and Bayview Heights (75 Bay Dr.)—for the upcoming gardening season.

Interested individuals have until Feb. 25 to submit their applications, and allotment of garden plots will be determined through a lottery draw shortly thereafter. It is important to note that returning community gardeners are required to re-apply annually. Eligible applicants must be residents of the City of Belleville, and it is advised that the waiver form be thoroughly reviewed before completing the application process.

For those seeking additional details or wishing to apply online, the official website is available. Individuals who are unable to apply online can obtain a paper copy by contacting, or by calling 613-967-3200, extension 3219 to apply over the phone.
