On Friday, March 1, the Government of Canada announced a Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF) grant of up to $5,234,207 to the Municipality of North Grenville, with plans to deliver around 671 new homes over the next three years.

The announcement was made by the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Housing Infrastructure and Communities, while the Honourable Jenna Sudds, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development, was present at North Grenville’s Municipal Centre on Friday to reveal the details.

The successful application for the grant was the culmination of extensive efforts by planning staff.

“We are heartened and encouraged by the award of this crucial funding to assist with North Grenville’s efforts to improve access to affordable housing in our community,” stated Mayor Nancy Peckford. “We recognize that in the face of a deepening housing crisis, the Housing Accelerator Fund is a rare opportunity to go beyond what would have been possible otherwise.”

Peckford also acknowledged the contributions of federal Housing Minister Sean Fraser and local MP Michael Barrett in advocating for rural housing solutions.

The funds from the grant will be allocated towards various endeavours aimed at reducing barriers to housing development in North Grenville, including the provision of pre-approved architectural plans for additional dwelling units, investment in underground infrastructure for multi-residential units, and the enhancement of zoning by-laws and building software. Potential partnerships with not-for-profit builders are also under consideration.

North Grenville is among a few smaller municipalities to receive funding from the Housing Accelerator Fund, which is part of the National Housing Strategy led by the Canada Mortgage Housing Corporation. The program aims to foster local initiatives and overcome barriers to housing development, ultimately increasing housing supply and promoting more affordable and diverse communities.
