A new play structure is coming to Brockville, and seven current structures are set to be upgraded.

Currently, the city boasts 26 parks with play structures, and soon it will be 27, with a new structure set to be installed in the Stirling Meadows subdivision.

A media release from the city explains that in 2022, staff began the procurement and capital planning process for seven play structures that were in most need of replacement. Over the years, these structures often deteriorate or become outdated, and the city is looking to keep up with the times. Staff have reviewed the specifications provided by Play Ground Planners, an Ottawa-based regional contractor/distributor of Little Tykes commercial grade play structures. They concluded that the proposal meets or exceeds the specifications set out by staff in the scope of the project so the task was awarded accordingly.

Members of the public may have seen crews removing these seven play structures, and will continue to see the removal and replacement of these at two per month over the next few months.

“Each of the new play structures will be equipped with a woven wood material packed for a new accessible base for all to enjoy, as we move all of the community play structures away from the sand bases,” the media release states.

The removal of the John Knox play structure is currently under way, and will soon be followed by those at George Street, Kensington, and Duke Street parks. John Knox will see the first new structure to be installed, with an approximate start date of May 1.

The full list of the seven parks receiving upgrades are as follows:

  • Duke St. Park
  • George St. Park (shown in the photo)
  • John Knox Park
  • Kensington Park
  • Kyle Court Park
  • Matthew Fraiser Park
  • Sophia St. Park

The total cost of this endeavour is $370,000, the city reports.
