A man wielding a knife in the middle of a downtown Belleville street has been charged by police.

The Belleville Police Service reports that on April 17, just before 5 p.m., officers were called to Dundas and Church Streets regarding a “suspicious male.”

Police were told the man had been observed by witnesses walking in a live lane of traffic with a knife in his hand. Officers located the male in possession of a five-inch folding knife, and he was arrested without incident.

Their subsequent investigation revealed the man was currently on a probation order, with one of his conditions being not to be in possession of a knife unless in his residence for the purpose of preparing or eating food.

As a result, the 33-year-old Kingston resident was charged with breach of probation. He was held for a bail hearing.
