A 30-year-old man found himself in handcuffs after an incident of panhandling turned violent at the Giant Tiger store on Park Street in Brockville on March 16.

Police were called to the scene around 12:30 p.m. following reports of the man harassing customers by soliciting money. Despite requests from store staff to vacate the premises, the man refused to comply.

Officers attempted to diffuse the situation and advised the man to leave, says a press release from Brockville police. However, he reportedly persisted in his refusal; when advised he was being placed under arrest, he began to resist.

The situation escalated when the man resisted arrest, resulting in a physical altercation. During the struggle, one officer sustained a kick to the back from the subject. Fortunately, there were no serious injuries reported.

The man, who police say is from Maryland and was visiting family in Brockville, was apprehended and taken into custody. He faces charges including resisting a peace officer, assaulting a peace officer, and failing to adhere to directives under the Trespass to Property Act.

He remains in custody pending a bail hearing.
