A 43-year-old man is currently in custody awaiting a bail hearing following a distressing incident involving a hammer and knife in downtown Belleville Thursday afternoon.

Police say that just before 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 28, law enforcement received a call about an incident on the Riverfront Trail. Witnesses reported an unidentified man wearing yellow headphones, military pants, and a black sleeveless shirt, kicking a parked vehicle and fleeing the scene.

When the vehicle owner confronted the man, he brandished a hammer and a knife from his backpack, prompting the owner to quickly drive away and contact the police.

Officers swiftly responded, gathering information from several witnesses. The male suspect was located and apprehended without further trouble. He is now detained, awaiting a bail hearing scheduled for Friday.

The suspect, who is of no fixed address, faces charges of possessing dangerous weapons, causing damage to property, and making threats. Charges have not been proven in court.
