It was a hattrick for Shaymus Stevenson as the Smiths Falls Jr. A Bears captured a nail-biting 4-3 overtime win over the visiting Hawkesbury Hawks in CCHL action on Sunday afternoon at the Smiths Falls Memorial Community Centre in front of a scant 156 fans.
The Bears remain at the top of the Robinson Division standings, two points ahead of the Renfrew Timberwolves with 51. Overall, Smiths Falls moved into third place behind Navan (56 points) and Cornwall (54) with Rockland close behind at 50 points. (Renfrew is in Pembroke at 7 p.m. Sunday night.)
Sunday, it was the Stevenson show as he scored his 22nd, 23rd and 24th goals of the season in a game that saw some chippy end-to-end action, with Bears forward Jackson Heron getting hit with a game misconduct after a check from behind in the first period.
The Bears outshot the visitors 42-19 but the score was knotted at one each after the first, and two apiece after two.
Smiths Falls held a 4-3 lead on Tyson Parker’s goal at the 6:30 mark of the third period, and that held steady until the 19:13 mark when Hawkesbury tied the score to force the overtime period. Scoring for the visitors were Alexis Billequey in the first, Cody Horner in the second and Jacob Skoczylas in the third.
Stevenson had some help on his opening goal of the game from Trevor Faucher which came at the 8:13 mark. He earned the game’s first star honours for his trifecta.
Hawkesbury tied it up at 15:54, then went ahead with just 3:33 gone in the second, before Stevenson knotted it once again. Lucas Culhane and Finnegan Kilmurray (third star) assisted on the Bears’ second marker at the 10:52 mark.
The winning netminder was Maverick Welk with 16 of 19 saves. Dimitri Pelekos took the loss with 38 of 42 saves to earn the game’s second star honours.
In previous meetings these two teams were evenly matched. Hawkesbury won the last two games of the season, 3-1 and 2-1. Smiths Falls won their first match 3-2.
SMITHS FALLS 5, BROCKVILLE 3
It was a 5-3 win for Smiths Falls in a rare away-game on Friday night. The Bears were in Brockville where they fell to a 2-1 deficit after the first period. Early in the second, they trailed 3-1 before bouncing back with two to tie the match at three apiece heading into the third period.
Two unanswered goals came in the final stanza as the Bears went on to win it 5-3.
Stevenson had two goals and a helper in the win to earn first-star honours, while Zane Spaniol was the second star as the Brockville netminder with 45 of 50 saves. Davis Hails was the third star with two assists for Smiths Falls.
Travis Ouellette, Lucas Culhane and Faucher had the Bears other goals, with two assists each from Foucher, Ouellette and Hailes, and singles from Stevenson, Watson, and Culhane.
The winning netminder was Nikolas Trakakis while Zane Spaniol took the loss.
In previous meetings this season, the Bears have won all three matchups: 4-1 and 4-1 in October, and 7-2 in September.

The Bears are in Cornwall on Thursday, Feb. 1 for a 7:30 p.m. puck drop. Friday, Feb. 2, they host Pembroke at 7:30 p.m. On Tuesday, Feb. 9, they host Rockland at 7:30 p.m.
