Calling all young people aged 10 to 24 with an interest in filmmaking!
The MyView Youth Film Festival is gearing up for its 2024 edition, promising an exciting platform for budding filmmakers in Eastern Ontario. Proudly supported by Kemptville’s McGahey Insurance and Grenville Mutual Insurance, the festival offers a $1,000 grand prize to the winning entry.
Building on the success of previous years, the festival will introduce two new categories for 2024. Jamming Around Man Productions sponsors a $500 prize for Best Original Music, while the YMCA of Eastern Ontario presents a special $500 award. EXIT Realty Eastern Ontario is also returning as a sponsor, contributing a $750 prize for the best “I Love My Community” film.
The festival has expanded its reach in 2024 with a partnership with the YMCA of Eastern Ontario, reaching out to Kingston and Napanee. This collaboration extends the opportunity for youth aged 10-24 in these regions to showcase their filmmaking talents. The festival is open to all youth living, working or playing in Eastern Ontario, with a list of eligible counties available on the festival’s official website, www.myviewfilmfest.ca.
Local public health units in Kingston and Eastern Ontario, along with the Leeds, Grenville & Lanark District Health Unit, have joined forces to promote the festival and provide a platform for young filmmakers in the area.
Participants are urged to create short videos that celebrate aspects of their lives or communities, present solutions to problems, or showcase personal opinions.
Judging criteria for the festival prioritize the content of the videos over production elements, aiming to encourage participation from all eligible youth, regardless of their filmmaking and production experience. Emma Yakimovich, the 2023 Grand Prize Winner, shared her positive experience, saying, “I loved filming, editing, being on the red carpet, and seeing the films the other kids made.”
The categories and respective prizes include:
- Best Overall Video: $1000
- I Love My Community: $750
- Best Original Music: $500
- YMCA Award: $500
- Age Category Prizes (10-13; 14-17; 18-24)
The deadline for video submissions is May 1, with youth permitted to submit multiple films either individually or as a group. Participants are encouraged to explore their communities for inspiration, with past winners addressing a range of topics from mental well-being to the cost of post-secondary education.
Wendy Embleton from EXIT Realty expressed anticipation for this year’s entries, emphasizing the importance of young people appreciating and showcasing their communities.
“Parents may get to choose their hometown, but it is wonderful when young people highlight how they appreciate their community,” Embleton said. “We look forward to seeing the entries for 2024.”
