Driver charged after refusing to submit to alcohol screening during Perth traffic stop: OPP

A traffic stop in Perth led to a Lanark Highlands resident being charged after refusing to submit to a roadside alcohol screening device test.

Lanark County OPP state in a media release the the vehicle was stopped on Drummond Street on Sunday, April 28, shortly after 1:30 a.m.

The officers demanded that the driver submit to a test using the approved roadside alcohol screening device, but they refused, according to a media release.

Shawn Mercier, age 32, was charged under the Criminal Code with refusal to comply with demand. The accused was also issued a 90-day Administrative Drivers Licence Suspension and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

This charge has not been proven in court.

The accused was released and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Perth on May 27, 2024.
