The Ontario Fire Marshal (OFM) has been called in to investigate after a blaze ravaged a building at 217 Pinnacle Street in Belleville on the evening of Sunday, Nov. 12.

The OFM is slated to collaborate with local investigators as they strive to unveil the cause behind the destructive fire.

Emergency responders, including Belleville police and fire crews, converged on the scene at the stone building positioned on the east side of Pinnacle Street, just north of Bridge Street East. The distress call was received around 11 p.m. on Sunday, revealing a structure engulfed in flames upon their arrival.

The Belleville Fire Department Fire Prevention team, upon initial assessment, has categorized the fire as suspicious, prompting the involvement of the OFM. The Office of the Fire Marshal will work in tandem with the Belleville Police Service Forensic Investigations Unit and Criminal Investigations Division to determine the origin and cause of the conflagration.

In light of the extensive property affected, a sizable section of the downtown core, spanning Pinnacle Street from Victoria Avenue to Bridge Street East, has been cordoned off by Belleville Police and emergency crews. This precautionary measure is vital to ensure public safety and the preservation of any potential evidence as forensic examiners process the scene.

Residents and commuters in the area are advised to anticipate significant delays throughout Tuesday and potentially into Wednesday. As the investigation unfolds, authorities are urging anyone with pertinent information about the incident to contact Detective Constable Erin McAdam at 613-966-0882, extension 4185, or via email at
