A Belleville man has been charged with assault after an alleged altercation over a dog.

In a media release, the Belleville Police Service says that just before 1 p.m. on April 15, they received a call from a woman who said her ex-partner was trying to steal her dig.

“During the altercation, the male grabbed the female victim by the neck,” the release reads. “Police attended the east end residence and spoke to the involved parties.”

As a result, a 40-year-old Belleville man was charged with assault. He was later released on an undertaking with a court date in May.

The name of the accused is not being released in order to protect the identity of the victim.
