For those travelling to Ottawa this summer, the Municipality of North Grenville encourages you to make the most of it by taking the scenic route and exploring the new “Follow44” route.

According to a media release issued on Thursday, June 13, the “Follow 44″ campaign is designed to encourage travellers to explore more than one hundred tourist-friendly destinations this summer along the Leeds Grenville County Road 44, a picturesque country drive that stretches from Ottawa, through Kemptville, and into Spencerville.

Lanarkist spoke with Heather Currie, tourism coordinator for the Municipality of North Grenville, and public relations student Mariia Dias to hear more about what locals and travellers alike can expect from this route.

Dias explained that the idea of creating a tourist route that ties local businesses and opportunities together came about a year ago from Meagan Warren, co-owner of Wildling Acres Flower Farm in Kemptville. This idea prompted Warren to reach out to other business owners in the area as well as the local municipalities, and the Regional Tourism Organization (RTO9). All parties were in agreement that this was a project they wanted to move forward with.

“Since then several other businesses have expressed excitement and support,” Dias explained. “For instance, Green Gables Vineyard Winery is hosting a launch event for these businesses. The idea is for them to get to know each other so they can recommend each other to their customers.”

Dias elaborated that “local establishments have definitely expressed their excitement. Caroline, the owner of Little Foot Alpacas, expressed hope for increased visitors and business and Amy, co-owner of The Odd Spot, also shared her enthusiasm for the initiative. Supporting local businesses within North Grenville and surrounding areas is a primary goal, as the campaign encourages collaboration and aims to boost local tourism and business traffic.”

Apart from benefiting local businesses, Follow44 organizers hope this new route will have a positive impact on tourists.

“It offers a curated scenic route with diverse activities, enhancing their travel experience and encouraging longer stays,” Dias said.

Some popular attractions you can visit along County Road 44 are the Saunders Country Critters, Rideau Rivers Provincial Park, Green Gables Vines, the Spencerville Mill, the Kemptville Farmers Market and the Ferguson Forest Centre.
