Leeds OPP are still on scene at Charleston Lake on the morning of Monday, Feb. 12 searching for two individuals who went through the ice the evening before.
OPP posted to X on the evening of Sunday, Feb. 11 that officers were at Charleston Lake searching for three “unaccounted for” individuals. It was later confirmed that all three had gone underwater.
A search and rescue operation was launched with the assistance of the Trenton Joint Rescue Coordination Centre.
In a video posted to X on Monday morning, officer Joey Mason confirmed one individual was “recovered safely,” but the other two are still missing.
“Our thoughts are with the families of the two other individuals who are missing,” Mason stated. He noted in the post to X that in addition to the aviation unit, the OPP’s Emergency Response Team and Underwater Search and Recovery Unit are assisting in the search.
The park will be closed for the foreseeable future for this investigation.
“No ice is safe ice,” Mason said in the video, urging people to exercise caution on area lakes.
