The City of Brockville will mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day with two special exhibits, presented by The Brockville Rifles and The Brockville Rifles Regimental Museum.

These displays will honour the service of The Brockville Rifles and the contributions of Brockville residents during the Second World War. The exhibits will be hosted at Brockville City Hall and The Brockville Museum.

Mayor Matt Wren will open the City Hall exhibit on June 3, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. in the lobby. The opening ceremony will feature several members of The Brockville Rifles in uniform, alongside descendants of Second World War veterans. This exhibit will remain on display until the end of June. The Brockville Museum’s exhibit will run from May 31 to July 3, 2024.

On June 6, 1944, the largest seaborne invasion in history began, leading to the liberation of France and occupied Europe from Nazi Germany. The Brockville Rifles and the City of Brockville played a significant role in this effort, with soldiers from The Brockville Rifles participating in D-Day and subsequent battles through France, Belgium, Holland, and into Germany.

The Brockville Rifles contributed over 150 soldiers to The Stormont, Dundas, and Glengarry Highlanders of the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division. They landed at Juno Beach and engaged in intense combat against the German 12th SS Panzer Division Hitler Jugend (Hitler Youth) at Les Buissons and Vieux-Cairon, an area known as “Hell’s Corner.” They also helped secure the beachhead at Beny-sur-Mer.
