Belleville resident facing multiple charges after $50,000 worth of stolen vehicles, equipment discovered

A Belleville resident already in custody on a murder charge is now also accused of stealing approximately $50,000 worth of vehicles and equipment across Central Hastings, Prince Edward County and Lennox and Addington.

In a Feb. 22 media release, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) state that on Feb. 7, members of the East Region Community Street Crime Unit located multiple pieces of stolen property in Prince Edward County. Police say these items were taken in multiple break and enters across the region.

As a result of the search, approximately $50,000 worth of stolen property was located, such as a 2008 Honda all terrain vehicle (ATV), a 2002 Honda off-road motorcycle, two KTM 2020 off-road motorcycles, a 2014 KTM off-road motorcycle, a 2010 Yamaha ATV, a 2021 Yamaha ATV, and a KUBOTA riding lawnmower, along with chainsaws, generators and other power tools.

As a result of the Investigation, Steven Courneyea, 26 years of age, from Belleville, has been charged with:

·        Two counts of Theft over $5,000,

·        Four counts of break and enter to commit an indictable offence,

·        Two counts of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 and

·        Four counts of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.

Charges have not been proven in court.

OPP Const. Philippe Regamey confirmed with Quinteist that this is the same Steven Courneyea currently on trial for the murder of 17-year-old Quinte West boy Kiean Stoddard.

Courneyea is currently in custody, and was in court in relation to the murder charge on the morning of Thursday, Feb. 22. He is represented by lawyer Ruth Roberts, who is waiting on disclosure from the Crown. His next court date for this matter is scheduled for mid-March.
