The Belleville Police Service has announced the establishment of a second Canine Unit, set to be deployed in 2024.

“This enhancement further strengthens a commitment to ensure safety and security of our community,” police state in a media release.

“Our community has always been our greatest ally in our mission to maintain public safety,” said Belleville Police Chief Mike Callaghan.
“The addition of our second Canine Unit is a testament to the power of partnerships and highlights our collaborative efforts in fostering a safer community.”

The chief went on to express gratitude the force has received from sponsors in the form of major donations to move this project ahead.

“This has allowed us to enhance our resources and service to the residents of Belleville. “

Since the program’s reinstatement in 2020, Canine Officer Const. Jesse McInroy and his partner, Bax, have been pivotal in law enforcement and public safety efforts, as noted by Callaghan. With the addition of this new Canine Unit, the service’s ability to respond to emergencies, investigate crimes, and provide specialized support to personnel will be enhanced.

Chief Callaghan emphasized the unique capabilities of these highly trained dogs and their handlers, ranging from narcotics detection and search and rescue operations to tracking missing persons and apprehending dangerous suspects. Additionally, the Canine Unit actively engages with community groups through presentations and conducts educational sessions with youth.

In the upcoming weeks, further details will be released to recognize and express gratitude to the donors and supporters who have championed this grassroots community initiative, further solidifying the bond between law enforcement and the Belleville community.
