Belleville police arrest man who allegedly chased a group of people down Front Street with a knife

A 20-year-old Belleville man is in custody after what local police are calling “a harrowing incident” near the downtown core early Friday.

In a media release, the Belleville Police Service reports that officers were dispatched to the area of Coleman Street near the footbridge around 2:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 2, after a group of people called to report a man had chased them from Front Street while wielding a knife.

A short time later, police located and arrested a man on nearby Isabel Street.

The man was charged with uttering threats, assault with a weapon and weapons dangerous.

He was held for a bail hearing later today, (Friday).

Police did not name the suspect.
