The City of Belleville has enlisted Paradigm Transportation Solutions Limited to undertake a comprehensive parking analysis of the downtown area.

A media release from the city explains that this initiative stems from the recognition of the necessity for a parking evaluation outlined in Belleville’s Transportation Master Plan in 2014. Given the evolution of the city since then, coupled with emerging trends and advancements in technology, there’s a pressing need for strategic planning concerning downtown parking, both in the short and long term.

Surveyors from Paradigm will commence data collection on parked vehicles in the downtown area. This process may involve individuals recording the last three digits of license plates on parked cars. Such data collection adheres to the guidelines set forth in the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, serving the sole purpose of parking data compilation, the city explains. Throughout this phase, access to roads, sidewalks, and parking lots will remain unobstructed.

Upon completion of the initial data gathering phase, the project team will engage with the community to address several key inquiries:

  • Is the current downtown parking infrastructure sufficient to meet peak demands?
  • Are there alternative approaches to managing parking demand or supply that could defer the necessity for constructing new municipal lots?
  • Are there innovative strategies to enhance the parking experience for downtown visitors, customers, and employees?
  • Given the contemporary shifts in travel behavior, what does the future of parking entail, and how can the city adequately prepare for it?

Residents are encouraged to monitor updates on the project via the dedicated page on Belleville’s official website: Belleville.ca/2024ParkingStudy.
